David Sheldrick Elephant Sanctuary

David Sheldrick Elephant Sanctuary

The Elephant orphanage is run by Daphne Sheldrick in memory of her late husband David, who was the founding warder of Tsavo. The public can have a brief view each day of the work being done to take orphan elephant calves and rhino calves, and prepare them for release into the wild. The keepers know each calf by name, feed them, care for them and sleep with them. Visitors have an opportunity to see the calves feeding from giant size baby bottles, playing football, having their mud baths, and doing their routines for those watching. Keepers also explain the process of rehabilitation which culminates in a return to Tsavo Game Reserve for the elephants. There is no charge to enter the orphanage, but it is possible to purchase refreshments, and souvenirs which contribute to the trust. It is also possible to sponsor an orphan elephant either on the spot, or online later. Visitors are only permitted entry from 11.00am until midday.
