The Cataract Hotel is "perched atop a granite hill" at the first rapids (cataracts) of the Nile, the appendage "Old" not only being a reference to its long and rich history, but also a reminder that there is a "New Cataract Hotel, of fairly recent construction". Initially built for tourists cruising the Nile at the end of the 18th Century, it remains "one of the finest hotels in Egypt" and a "living history" which transports guests to "Egypt's Victorian past and Howard Carter reveling in his recent discovery of Tut's Tomb." Brian Johnston describes the interior of the hotel as "cluttered with antiques and Moorish architecture" and makes reference to its imperialist past before praising its "romantic location, five-star luxury and magnificent sense of history". The Cataract Hotel was, upon opening in 1899, "an instant success" which prospered to such an extend that even though it was enlarged a year later "tents had to be erected in the grounds to deal with the demand."
