Museu d´Art Contemporani de Barcelona MACBA

Museu d´Art Contemporani de Barcelona MACBA

The Museu d´Art Contemporani de Barcelona, or MACBA as it is known, is in the Plaça dels Àngels in Barcelona. Although the idea for a modern art collection was formed in 1959, building did not begin until 1988 and the gallery opened to the public in 1995. Even before entering, Richard Meier’s architecture is a work of art in itself, combining straight and curved lines. The interior is full of natural light, especially from the huge atrium space parallel to the main façade. The collection is of art from 1950 onwards, by Catalonian, Spanish and international artists. The gallery makes a conscious effort to appeal to everyone by presenting the art in different ways. The medieval Convent dels Angels opposite has a chapel, the Capella del Macba, converted for video art performances. Special exhibitions are held frequently and travelling exhibitions take some of the collection to other cities. There is a programme of courses, seminars and lectures and a large archive for research. Opening times vary, details are on the website.
