Situated between the Ramblas and the Via Laietana, and not far from the Plaça de Catalunya, this restaurant first opened in 1897 in a building by modernist artist Puig. For many years, it was the haunt of many local artists including from 1899 a young Picasso. This was to be the setting for his first ever exhibition. Gaudi was also a patron of the tavern. Due to insolvency, the 4 Cats was closed in 1903 and wouldn't reopen as an eatery until the end of the 70s. Today, the restaurant tries to remain faithful to its original image. It is open for lunch and diner, when customers can enjoy a musical accompainment of piano and violin with their meal.
