Airborne Museum Hartenstein

Airborne Museum Hartenstein

This museum is dedicated to Operation Market Garden of September 1944, an Allied attempt to outflank the Germans by crossing the Rhine in Holland and striking at the Ruhr. The Hartenstein Hotel was originally the headquarters of Feldmarschall Model, but after the landings he moved east to co-ordinate the counter-attacks and it became the command post of Major-General Urquhart of the 1st Airborne division. As has been well documented in the book and film "A Bridge Too Far", the operation failed. The hotel building now houses on three floors displays of the military operation, explanations of why it failed, and many exhibits in the form of photos, newspaper reports, notices, uniforms, guns and ordnance. There is also a film presentation. The museum is open Mondays to Saturdays 10am to 5pm April to November and 11am to 5pm the rest of the year. Sunday opening hours are noon to 5pm. Closed Christmas Day and New Year's Day. It is wheelchair accessible. There is a shop, and refreshments are available.
