This is a luxe hotel, set about a block from Unter den Linden. It was built as an avant-garde architectural showcase in the mid-1970s by the East German government. Today, despite frequent renovations, it still evokes a jazzy, modern, and vaguely dated kind of architecture that features lots of chrome and stainless steel. There's a bustle here, however, thanks in part to a hardworking and polite staff, and a regular clientele of business clients and conventioneers. Avant-garde artwork is exhibited throughout, and Phillipe Starck created some of the furniture. Rooms are individually designed, soothing, uncluttered, and comfortable. Most provide a fax outlet and all have reclining chairs. Each unit comes with a good-size private bathroom with tub and shower.
