[more]The Grunewald Hunting Lodge is the oldest still existing castle in Berlin. It was built for Elector Joachim II of Brandenburg in 1523 in a Renaissance style and extended during the 18th century when some Baroque style outbuildings were added.
The forests around the castle, which is located at the southeastern part of the Grunewaldsee (Grunewald Lake) were always a popular spot for the Prussian rulers and almost all of them from the 16th century on used the lodge.
Since 1932 the lodge serves as a museum.
The lodge has undergone renovations recently and will be open from May 2009 on again. On display are furniture and porcelain, many pieces of art from the 15th to 18th century and findings from excavations that date back to the 16th century.
The Hunting Lodge at Grunewaldsee is, as part of the Palaces and Parks of Potsdam and Berlin, listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site.
