    Vail Ski Resort has been voted best ski area in the United States fourteen of the last seventeen years. It is the largest ski area in the United States with 5289 acres. There are 34 lifts. The longest run is 4 miles. The area is broken down 18% beginner, 29% intermediate and 53% advanced and expert. Several of the lifts have a restaurant at the top of them. The area is open for skiing from about the middle of November to about the middle of April depending on snow conditions. Hours of operation run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. for the first half of the season and to 4 p.m. during the second half of the season. Different from most areas in that the ski area built the town. The town is located right off interstate 70. Vail is a year round resort with golf, hiking, horseback riding and other summer activities available during the summer. Adult mid season ticket price is $92 when bought at the window. However purchasing seven days in advance and internet purchases gain more favorable rates.

    Loveland ski area has 1 365 skiable acres. Its base elevation is 10 600 feet with a summit elevation of 13 010 feet. There are a total of 13 lifts of various types. The parking is free. The Loveland Ski area is only 53 miles from Denver. The slopes are broken down as 13% beginner, 41% intermediate and 46% advanced. The area gets about 400 inches of snow annually and competes with Arapahoe Basin to see which will be the first to open for the year. The ski area does have its own snow making equipment. The area is open from October to May. The hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. It should be noted this is Loveland Ski area and should not be confused with Loveland, Colorado. Loveland, Colorado is located north of Denver between Longmont, Colorado and Fort Collins Colorado and is located on the prairie. Loveland Ski area is west 53 miles of Denver and 12 miles west of Georgetown at the base of Loveland Pass.

    Elephant Rock Cycling Festival

    This cycling event takes place on the first Sunday in June and has been running for 20 years. Participation is limited to the first 7000 people to register and the event is open to persons 14 years and older. There are several distances set up ranging in distance from 32 miles to 100 miles for road bikes, a 25 mile off-road course (mountain bike) and an 8 mile family course. Fees vary by distance but the first three road courses are $55. The other three distances are $40. Start times also vary by distance with the earliest (which is also the longest) starting between 5:30 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. The course winds through Douglas and El Paso counties starting and ending at the Douglas county fair grounds in Castle Rock. It includes an expo and party also occur at this site for this event. Every 8 -15 miles aid rest stations are provided and road assistance is provided via sag wagons and various law enforcement agencies.

Arapahoe Basin offers 105 trails for all levels, for beginners there are ski schools available. The resort is served by 7 lifts which open at 8.30 in the morning. There are several shops, rental facilities for equipment, cafes and restaurants directly at Arapahoe, the closest facilities for accommodation can be found in Keystone.     Trail Ridge road lies mostly within the Rocky Mountain National Park, connecting the towns of Grand Lake on the west and Estes Park on the east via U.S. Highway 34. This is the highest continuous paved highway in the United States with a maximum elevation of 12183 ft (3713 m). Mount Evans Scenic Byway is higher but ends in a dead end. The highway is closed during the winter due to extreme snow pack. Most years the target for opening is the Memorial Day weekend. It remains open until there is a significant snowfall, which is usually in October. Rocky Mountain National Park entrance fees apply. The fee for a private vehicle is $20 and is valid for 7 days. For individuals (pedestrians, bicycles, and motorcycles) $10 entrance fee is required.
