Stanley Park is located in downtown Vancouver and was established as a park in 1888. It is managed and cared for by the Vancouver Park Board. It covers an area of over 1,000 acres (405 hectares) and contains over 8.8 kilometres of footpaths. It is larger than New York’s Central Park and welcomes over 8 million visitors every year. A seawall runs along the boundary of the park and there is a footpath that runs along its entire length, which is popular with walkers and cyclists. This circular footpath is used by over 2.5 million pedestrians every year. Attractions within Stanley Park include the Vancouver Aquarium, a children’s farmyard, an open air theatre and a pitch and putt golf course. In addition to this there are also several statues and monuments and areas of mature woodland. The woodland features native trees including Western Red Cedar and Douglas Firs, which provide an important habitat for birds and mammals. Access to Stanley Park is free of charge and it is kept open during daylight hours.
The Vancouver Aquarium is located within Stanley Park where it occupies a 2.1 acre site (9,000 m²). Its history dates back to 1956 and it is now run by a non profit making organisation. Today the aquarium is a major tourist attraction in the city but also serves as a marine research centre and also as a part of a conservation program that helps release animals back into their natural habitat. The main aquarium contains 166 different displays and in addition to this there are numerous themed galleries. These galleries are regionalised and include Artic Canada, the Wild Coast, Pacific Canada and Treasures of the British Columbia Coast. In addition to this there are also galleries from further a field including the tropic Zone and Amazon rainforest. Examples of animals that can be found in the aquarium include dolphins and beluga whales. This attraction is accessible for disabled visitors and a limited number of wheelchairs are available for loan on a first come first served basis. Facilities include toilets, a café and a gift shop. Opening hours and admission prices can be found on the website.
