UNESCO Group of Monuments at Pattadakal

UNESCO Group of Monuments at Pattadakal

The UNESCO World Heritage Committee listed the Monuments at Pattadakal in 1987 There are nine Hindu temples and a Jain sanctuary dating from the 7th and 8th centuries. Of these the Temple of Virupaksha was singled out for particular attention and it is noted that this temple was commissioned by Queen Lokamahadevi to commemorate the victory of Vikramaditya II over kings from the South of India. The oldest temple is the Sangamesvara circa A.D. 697. Used for royal coronations and noted for their architectural features, the Monuments at Pattadakal feature varied ceiling panels, reliefs and inscriptions. Pattadakal also hosts the Chalukya Utsava, a three-day dance festival which is held in January/February. The temples are open from dawn to dusk and an entry fee of approximately $5.00 (US) is charged for visitors aged 15 and older. Pattadakal is located approximately 22km from Badami, 134km from Bijapur and more than 500km from Bangalore. It is connected by road and rail to both Bangalore and Mysore.

Dudhsagar Falls

Dudhsagar Falls

Dudhsagar Falls (literally meaning The Sea of Milk) lie high up in the Mandovi River's watershed and is listed as India's 5th tallest waterfall, 227th in the world at 310 m. It is a major part of the Goa ecosystem. Dudhsager Falls is located within The Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary, which is located at the Goan town of Mollem. With a total area of 240 sq kms, this is the largest of Goa's four protected wildlife areas. You are asked to pay a small entrance fee (around three English pounds) and are also asked to pay another £1 if you intend on taking photos. In order to get to the entrance of The Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary where The Falls are, you will need to take a ride in a Jeep and the costs of this is split between the six people in the Jeep and ends up costing about £5 each (the rangers wait until there are 6 people for the Jeep, so no need to worry if you are travelling in a smaller group).
