Robben Island Museum

Robben Island Museum

Robben Island, approximately 12 km off the Table Bay coast, is steeped in history and has served, amongst other things, as a military base and leper colony. It has also been a penitentiary for many years and was where Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners were incarcerated since the nineteen-sixties. Since 1997 it has become a museum and guided tours, which last about three and a half hours and include a visit to the Maximum Security Prison, are available. Robben Island was declared a World Heritage Site in 1999.

Adjacent to the Company Gardens and Houses of Parliament, Tuynhuys has a rich history as the residence of governors of the Cape since 1750 and in later years the State Presidents of South Africa. From its humble beginnings as a tool shed in 1674, Tuynhuys (meaning Garden House) had grown into the venue for State Banquets and pomp. It was restored in 1967 and would be of interest to visitors who appreciate architecture. Presently it is the Office of the President when Parliament is in session in Cape Town.

One of only 3 such Swiss cable systems worldwide, the current cable way was installed in 1997 and has a rotating floor which offers visitors a 360 degree view as they travel between the lower cable way station and the top of Table Mountain. Each of the two cable cars transport 65 passengers at a time and takes between 5 and 10 minutes to complete its journey. Facilities at the top of Table Mountain include a 120-seater restaurant and there are a number of hiking trails which enable visitors to enjoy the indigenous fauna and flora. Hours of operation are between 08h30 and 18h00 during May to mid-September. Hours are extended for the rest of the year and details are obtainable at the website.
