[more]Astley Hall Museum and Art Gallery in Chorley is a building which dates back to Elizabethan times and is surrounded by parkland and woodlands.
The site on which the Hall is located was bought by the Charnock family in the 15th century but recently found evidence suggests that there has been a settlement as early as the bronze age.
The first property built by the Charnock family on the site was a timber framed house, erected between 1575 and 1600. Parts of the timber frame have survived and been incorporated in the later built grand hall that can be visited today and which was constructed during the late 17th century.
Since 1924, after it was donated to the Chorley Corporation, it is used as a museum and art gallery.
Astley Hall's own collection includes fine 18th century creamware, glass, paintings, furniture dating back to the 16th and 17th century, the first ever Rugby League Cup and more.
In the vast parkland that surrounds the castle you can find a pets area, children's play areas, coffee / tea kiosk and a cafe.
Admission to the hall and park are free, for information about opening hours please visit the website.
