[11/08/2008] The reviewer went with the intention of proposing (successfully) and the early part of the review is taken up with his choice of Cortina. The Cristallo has a "commanding" presence and reputation, having been built in 1901 and accommodated famous guests. It is "grand", but "not oppressively so" and has "charm and sophistication".
Rooms are "comfortable, pretty", while suites are "wood-panelled and check-chintzed". Views everywhere are "jaw-dropping".
There is a choice of "posh or stube-style" restaurants and a "cracking" bar, with a piano crooner, serving top vodka Martinis. The restaurant is "excellent" but the breakfasts take "pride of place".
There is a beauty centre in the basement offering a range of treatments. The reviewer finds these "frankly scary" but the massage to soothe skiing aches and pains is "the business".
Skiing is the main activity but slopes are not "hard core" and just before Christmas there are not many crowds. Nightlife is "quiet". There are "very good" restaurants, including a michelin-starred one. The town is "twinkly", has a "pretty" shopping centre and some of the "prettiest" cable car journeys in the world. Access from the airport is lengthy, at 100 miles from Venice.
The review also includes details of rooms for the disabled, that children are welcome and small pets allowed.
