Sibiloi National Park

The park lies on the northeastern shore of Lake Turkana and was established in 1973 to protect prehistoric and archeological sites linked to the origin of man. Fossils of crocodiles, giant tortoise and elephants have been found in this dry semi desert bush. Wildlife includes crocodile, flamingoes, zebra, giraffe, hippo, pellicans. One of the major attraction of the park is the Koobi Fora archeological site that preserves numerous fossils of terrestrial mammals, including early hominin species. The park covers 1,570km² and was listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 as a part of Lake Turkana National Parks.

UNESCO Lake Turkana National Parks

Lake Turkana National Parks is a group of three national parks (Sibiloi, Central Island and South Island) inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997 and expanded in 2001. The park is a stopping point for migratory birds, and a breeding ground for the Nile crocodile, hippopotamus, and snakes. Lake Turkana is 265km long with an average width of 30km and it is the only permanent source of water for the Gabbra and Merille local tribes. The Central Island National Park is an important crocodile breeding ground and offers beautiful scenery with its crater lakes. The South Island National Park is an excellent bird watching area with numerous pelicans, flamingos and other water birds.
