The Iveagh Gardens

The Iveagh Gardens

The Iveagh Gardens are located in Dublin’s city center on Clonmel Street, not far from the southwest corner of St. Stephen’s Green. Designed by landscape architect Ninian Niven in 1865, the gardens represent a collection of tableaux styles that rest on a continuum between ‘French Formal’ and ‘English Landscape’. Key features of the 8.5-acre park include a boxwood maze with a sundial at center, the cascade, the Victorian Rosarium (complete with rose planting from early 19th-century varieties), the American Garden, small woodland spaces, lawns, fountains, scattered pieces of seemingly ancient statuary damaged by time, archery grounds, and a network of pathways. The gardens are surrounded by high stone walls and accessed through three inconspicuous gates, making the park easy to mistake for a private enclave. Entrances are located on Hatch Street Upper (with wheelchair access), on Clonmel Street, and behind the National Concert Hall on Earlsfort Terrace. The park is open daily, mostly during daytime hours. Visitors planning outings during the early morning or evening should check detailed schedules of operation. Admission is free.
