Edinburgh Festival

Edinburgh Festival

Edinburgh Festival takes place every year in mid August and early September. By definition, Edinburgh Festival does not apply to only one single event. It refers to a lot of events that take place at the same time simultaneously. For instance there is the official International Festival that takes place in operas, theatres and stages all over the city. Every year different plays are shown like Macbeth and other Shakespeare plays and some contemporary plays. It brings together top performers of music and dance. An alternative to the festival are the Fringe and the Free Fringe Festivals--a performing arts festival, taking place mainly on the streets of the city. It usually shows more unusual and not so official performances, sometimes even experimental ones, that might not even be allowed to be performed in official venues. In addition to that, there is also the Military Tattoo that is a is celebration of the Commonwealth and includes displays by the British Armed Forces and some military bands. For book lovers, there are also the Book Festivals.

The Scotch Whisky Heritage Centre

The Scotch Whisky Heritage Centre

The production of whisky in Scotland dates back over 500 years. The Scotch Whisky Heritage Centre is a museum and miniature theme park dedicated to this Scottish tradition. The introductory tour is a guided walk through the different processes involved. There is a model showing how a distillery is laid out and adults are given "a wee dram" to taste. The heritage centre ghost then explains the concepts of "nose", "angel share" and "maturation". The tour finishes with a ride through a historical pageant in a whisky barrel. The Centre has its own shop and restaurant. Open daily except Christmas Day 9:30am to 6:30pm (May Sep) 10:00am to 6pm (Oct Apr) Tickets: Adults: £ 8.95 Seniors, Students, Disabled: £ 6.75 Child: £ 4.75 The centre is wheelchair accessible.
