Originally called “Las Gaviotas”, which was christened as “Isla Negra” by Pablo Neruda, whose poems were prompted by his memory of the black island of Sumatra.Isla Negra was the utmost place inspiration for the Nobel Prize Chilean writer&poet Pablo Neruda. Here he spent most of his time while in Chile with his third wife, Matilde Urrutia. His house here was built to resemble a ship with narrow passageways and creaking floors due to his passion for the sea and all things related. He was a passionate collector of bottles, Mascarones (figureheads on ships), maps, shells, etc. His house is now a museum recognized worldwide and Isla Negra was the inspiration for many of his writings.“The Poet´s Madness” hostel renders honor to Isla Negra´s poet and the many artists residing in this artistic seashore town of Chile. It tries to capture the poetic essence of Neruda as well as his and other artist’s romantic and passionate ways of thinking and lifestyle.
