Μονή Δαφνίου

Μονή Δαφνίου

The Monastery of Daphni is located 11 km west of Athens on the Sacred Way to Elefsis. The first monastery was built in the 6th century A.D. on an ancient sanctuary of Apollo Daphnaios and it is dedicated to the Dominion of the Virgin. It was reconstructed at the end of the 11th century and now is surrounded by a wall. From the sanctuary remains only one Ionic column. The others were 'taken' by Lord Elgin and now are in London. It is known for the superb mosaics in the interior of the church dating from the end of 11th century. These mosaics are a fine example of the Classical idealism of Middle Byzantine art. They have scenes from the life of Christ and the Virgin and also archangels, prophets, martyrs and saints. From 1990 the monastery with the Ossios Loukas and Nea Moni of Chios have been included in the World Heritage List Of UNESCO.
