Described as relaxed and trendy, the Malmaison Leeds is a converted warehouse for people 'who probably live in one'.

The rooms, with beds 'Wide enough for a threesome', are large and tasteful with the usual mod cons. The Bathroom is 'light, large, and well outfitted' - stocked with classy toiletries.

Down to the Restaurant which serves French with a twist: 'chicken liver partfait with fig jam; tarte tatin of feta cheese' - for £25-£35 a head, with 'Efficient service'.

Location wise, the Malmaison is right in the heart of the City, being close to a number of listed attractions: The Kirkgate Market, West Yorkshire Playhouse, Royal Armouries and the Henry Moore Institute, with a little further afield 'some stunning countryside' to be found.

Priced for doubles and twins are listed as from £99, and the author said they'd go back 'Like a shot'.

The author was "most stunned" by the renaissance of an "old, aging, and decrepit" tram and bus garage into a "stylish" hotel of "charm and character". He made the point that this form of building "recycling" is becoming a hallmark of England. He was impressed with the "sexy, cool and slinky" contrasting colour schemes he found within. Each individual guest room is well-designed, having a superb bed and up to date en suites. He found the menu served in the notable downstairs bar and brasserie "tantalizing". The hotel also offers a "high-tech" gym, 24 hour room service and laundry facilities. Frommers describes the Malmaison, Leeds as "expensive" ($$$) and has given it a one-star "highly recommended" rating.
