Rooms are large and comfortable and decorated in 'nautical' themes which are amusing the first time you see them but you soon realise that the pictures are pretty much the same in each room. The beds are a delight which is unusual in Holland where short single beds with sparse cotton duvets are the norm but the Mercure has large doubles with brightly coloured duvets and throws.

Breakfast at the Mercure is excellent with an enormous range of hot and cold food, however it is RIDICULOUSLY expensive at more than €20. Who can eat enough to do justice to such a cost first thing in the morning? Certainly not me. If you can, try to get a rate that includes breakfast. I ate at the hotel once in the evening from the buffet but since the main restaurant was undergoing refurbishment at the time this had been set up in an upstairs ballroom so my experience probably wasn't typical of what you'd likely experience.

The Mercure isn't the sort of hotel I'd choose if I didn't have a car and wanted to visit the centre of Amsterdam but it's comfortable and close to the office so I have no problem to stay there.
