This long review touches on several themes. It highlights the history of the hotel, with "stories" of owners and guests. It emphasises throughout the warmth and friendliness of the staff. Finally it points out the high quality of the accommodation, services and amenities.

The reviewer's room was "superb" with a view of the "iconic" lighthouse. The bathroom was tiled in "beige and light brown" and the "marble" bath was big enough for his six foot frame, an aspect he appreciated.

The food is covered in detail and is described as "delicious" and "fabulous" with local specialities including oysters which "everyone eats". Restaurant service was provided by the "old school" maitre d' who was "lovely" and the "new school" sommelier who was "suave, erudite" and "delightful". High tea on his first afternoon was "splendid" as well as being "terribly colonial".

One of the bars, the Lighthouse Bar, is "popular with the young crowd" and indeed was so "packed to the rafters" people were being turned away.

Although recently refurbished, the hotel retains its links with the past and is said to have a "similar flavour" to Raffles in Singapore. Some pieces have been kept such as the "huge painted tilework" in the hall (another story) and the Gril Room chandeliers. But in an instant the atmosphere can change to "all blue swimming pool".

The reviewer tried the spa although he finds them "intimidating". He enjoyed the Hammam with its "big bowls" and "multi-jet showers". Other facilities include the Union Castle function room, a "splendid" library and a "tiny" cinema.

Nearby are beaches, shopping malls, parks and a "magnificent" show of roosting swallows. Overall the Oyster Box will suit people who "don't really care about cost" but still like "the personal touch".
