The author describes the design of the Bab Al Shams Desert Resort & Spa designed as "Arabian village with simple one- and two-storey buildings connected by courtyards and winding stone staircases". The entrance is an "imposing archway" which, according to the author, "sets a rather Beau Geste tone". The real surprise is inside, where a "Hollywood epic becomes intimate 'designer rustic' ". Features include "low ceilings, lantern-lit alcoves and meandering paths". The hotel offers 15 bedrooms and suites, some of them with "balconies or private terraces". For a "hammam-style soaking" the suites have "walk-in showers with stone seats set into the undulating walls ".
Guests are spoiled in "the stylish, simple spa" which includes "four indoor treatment rooms and an outdoor room spacious enough for a couple".
Guests can relax at the "outdoor swimming pool" or "on cushioned terraces" or, best of all, "sprawled on a sofa at the rooftop bar" which offers "apple shisha under the stars".
The restaurants in the hotel offer "an international buffet" or a "more animated affair, with cooking stations, belly dancers, henna painting and falconry displays".
