It is situated just behind the old Serail fortress, home to the Ottoman pashas who ruled Libya until the Italian colonisation of the country in 1911. Its architecture is a perfect match to its name - The gate to Africa. This five-star hotel is one of the few operational premises, which provide all the comfort by Western standards. It is safe with metal-detectors and security guards at the entrance, although Libya is the only North-African nation with no terrorist incidents in recent years. Inside the hotel is spacious and the atmosphere relaxing. The rooms offer the expected high standard facilities and some of the most exiting views on the city and the port (if you are lucky to get some upper floor room). Don't miss the Maroccan bar at the roof of the huge building with a breathtaking panorama on Tripoli. The main restaurant near the entrance (level -1) is the place to spend the evening. However, don't expect your excellent cous-cous to be accompanies by a glass of wine - alcohol is forbidden in the Jamahiria! Instead you can opt for a tasty green tea with mint and sugar. Here you will have the opportunity to listen to some popular classical potpouri for piano and violin - probably the only live Western music in a capital which prefers religious devotion and Oriental tunes. Corinthia also offers a fitness complex and a swimming pool both inside and outside the hotel. However, if you are a lady, expect some extra attention from male sportsmen, as Libyan men are not used to the view of women in swimming suits. It is nothing personal, so it is better to ignore the persistent stares!
