    Kloster Lorsch

    The Imperial Abbey in Lorsch was founded was founded by the Frankish Count Cancor and his mother Williswinda in 764 AD. The former Benedictine monastery is regarded as one of the most significant examples of pre-Romanesque building techniques in Germany and, together with the Altenmünster monastery, it has been designated an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1991. The abbey in Lorsch is especially famous for its Torhalle (entrance hall), its Koenigshalle is the remaining building of the monastery that dates back to Carolingian times and is one of the best known examples of pre-medieval architecture. The rich decorations of the upper floor are a reminder of the importance and power this monastery has held once.A museum, the lapidarium, where medieval findings are on exhibit can be found in the cellar of the monastery. The monastery is open all year round until dusk, the upper floor of the Koenigshalle and the Lapidarium are only accessible via guided tour. This can be arranged for groups of minimum 10 people.
