Belfort

Belfort

It was built between 1313 and 1380 and is 91 metres high. It has served as a bell tower to announce the time and various warnings, but also as a fortified watchtower. The upper part has been rebuilt many times, especially to accommodate the growing number of bells. The Belfry consists of 6 floors hosting art objects, historical documents such as the original plans of the building, and a clock by J.B.Richet (1670) wihich controls a 52-bell carillon. On each bell is a girl and a lion image, the symbol of Ghent. During the tour one can visit the tower, the carillon and the Bellmuseum. The Belfry has been listed as UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1999. Visiting hours: from 15th March until 15th November 10:00-18:00. From 01st May until 01st October guided tours at 14:10, 15:10 and 16:10. Not accessible to people on wheelchairs. Entrance fee: 3 €; children until 12 years free.
