Edinburgh Zoo dates back to 1913 and is owned by the Royal Zoological Society of Scotland and was originally known as the Scottish National Zoological Park. It is located on Corstorphine Hill and overlooks the city of Edinburgh.
Today the zoo provides a home for around 1,000 different animals and covers an area of 330,000 m2 (82 acres). It receives over 600,000 visitors every year, which makes it the second most visited tourist attraction in Scotland (that charges an admission fee), after Edinburgh Castle.
The animals at Edinburgh Zoo include mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians. Many of the species are endangered and the zoo has a program that promotes the conservation of these threatened creatures.
Edinburgh Zoo is open daily from 9am throughout the year (including Christmas Day), closing times vary during the year from between 4.30pm and 6pm. Admission prices for adults are £14.00 (18 Euros) and £9.50 (11 Euros) for children aged 3-15.
