The Antique Theatre is one of the most famous sights in Plovdiv. It is one of the best preserved examples of an ancient theatre in the world and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004. Plovdid is one of the oldest towns in Europe, dating back 8,000 years. The theatre was built in 2BC during the reign of King Traqn. The theatre is part of the architecture preserve "Old Plovdiv" and is one of the most significant social buildings for that time. Perperikon

Perperikon

Situated 1,400 ft above sea level near village of Kaloyantsi, Perperikon is rich in archaeological sites which show signs of 5th millennium BC civilisations. Some of the discoveries made include the so-called "Palace", which is thought to be the "proverbial Temple of Dionysus". There is also a round altar which is nearly 6 ft in diameter, an acropolis and two outer cities which are still being researched. This is also the site of the Perperikon Art Festival, an annual event which started in 2001 and now ranks as one of the cultural highlights in Bulgaria. The festival is held just prior to the June solstice and details are available at the website.
