Hotel Scandic Grand Marina Helsinki
This hotel is a superb conversion from an early 20th-century harbour warehouse, a massive brick palace from the days when Helsinki was booming and things were built to last. As such, it has bags more character than most business hotels, with cool, colourful, and recently refurbished rooms.
It boasts a great location on the lovable Jugendstil island of Katajanokka, and is right by the ferry terminals; watching the big beasts glide into the heart of Helsinki provides one of the Finnish capital's lasting memories. There are, however, no direct views of the harbour from the hotel, due to a conference centre opposite. The public spaces have a cool, low-lit, and classy feel, which is continued in the air-conditioned rooms. There are some especially nice suites; one is a duplex whose upstairs bedroom has a harbour view; another has a charming zen feel with the bed tucked away in a cosy nook. Service and facilities are particularly good at this hotel, and although it's but a short stroll to the heart of town, this part of Helsinki is very peaceful.
