The three storey-high glass domed Florida Aquarium was opened in March 1995 and has become a landmark on the edge of the Channelside district of downtown Tampa . Its mission statement declares the organisation to be dedicated to public entertainment, education and conservation. The facility is home to over ten thousand aquatic plants and animals, birds and fish from over thirteen hundred species from Florida and all over the world.
The aquarium exhibits range over two floors and can be seen on a self paced walking tour through a variety of diverse habitats such as wetlands, bays and beaches and coral reefs. There is a large shark tank and special displays of rare creatures such as seahorses and spiders. Children may also pet a ray. Descriptive cards are located throughout the building.
The aquarium owns a catamaran which organises ecological trips around Tampa Bay.
There is a large car park on site and the TECO trolley stops nearby.
