Bodo Schillat discovered a mountain cave in1969 and, after the 1,100 meters long cave had been explored and documented, it was closed. In 1992 Hartmut Brepohl discovered another cave in the same quarry and named it after Schillat. Declared a showcave and opened to the public in August 2004, the Schillat Cave can be accessed by elevator as its entrance is approximately 36m below the quarry edge. Showcases inside the cave display various crystals, fossils and minerals. There are also reproduced cave drawings and a 3D show which portrays the treasures of the main locked cave is displayed. There is a cafe on site and, as the temperature is kept at a constant 8 °Celsius, visitors are advised to dress appropriately.
