Trooping The Colour

Trooping The Colour

The ceremony of Trooping the Colour takes place in London every year on the sovereign’s official birthday in June, and is also called the Queen’s Birthday Parade. Its origins lie in the parading of regimental flags to troops before battle, so that they would recognise them as a rallying point. After the battle they would be paraded again to show they were still intact. As a ceremony to mark the sovereign’s official birthday it dates from 1748 and has been held annually since 1820. Today, of course, it is purely ceremonial, but gives an opportunity for the household division to pay tribute to the sovereign. The household division comprises the foot guards and the household cavalry, and each year one battalion of one of the 5 foot guards regiments is selected to troop their colour. The sovereign, wearing the colours of the “trooping” regiment, takes the salute personally. The present Queen up till recently performed this on horseback, but now appears in a carriage. Nearly 1500 troops and bandsmen take part. The ceremony takes place on Horse Guards Parade where places are allocated by ballot. Alternatively spectators can watch the royal procession from Buckingham Palace.
