Staples Center

Staples Center

The Staples Center is an award wining multi-purpose sports arena, located in Downtown Los Angeles, directly next to the Convention Centre Complex of the city. The building of the stadium was financed privately, it was completed in 1999 and named after the office-supply company Staples who owns the naming rights. The building costs were around $375 million and the stadium is used for large indoor events such as concerts, award ceremonies, ice hockey, basketball and other sports events. Currently it is home to 4 professional sports franchises, the Los Angeles Lakers and Los Angeles Clippers (both NBA), the Los Angeles Sparks (WNBA) and the Los Angeles Kings (NHL). Since its opening it has hosted a multitude of events, such as 9 Grammy awards, and many international super-stars have performed here, including Tina Turner, Peter Gabriel, Madonna, U2, Prince, Christina Aguilera, and many more. Recently it has made headlines for being the venue in which Michael Jackson held his last rehearsal, 2 days before he passed away in June 2009. In front of the stadium you can see statues of sports legends Wayne Gretzky and Magic Johnson.
