Construction of this white marble edifice, the third largest church in the world, commenced in 1386 and was completed in the 19th-century. The architecture is Gothic in style with highlights such as pointed arches and stained glass windows. There are also 3400 statues within the 11 700 square metre cathedral. Views from the roof are also possible and the cathedral is open to the public daily from 09.30 12.30 and 15.00 till 18.00. Appropriate attire is recommended.

When you walk up from the underground the amazing white architecture of Milan's Duomo (cathedral) dominates the vision, and what a magnificent building it is. I'd been told it looked like a wedding cake, but my first impression was that it looked like a mountain and there at the top, on a 108m high spire is the 3900 pieces of gold-leaf Madonnina statue, looking out over the city since 1774.
