Trinity Church

Trinity Church, located on Broadway at Wall St in Lower Manhattan, received its original Anglican charter in 1697 from King William III. The present building was consecrated by the Episcopal Bishop of New York in 1846 and is the third Trinity Church to occupy this site. The first was destroyed in 1776 by the Great Fire of New York, and the second was torn down due to structural damage. The current church was New York’s tallest building from 1846 until 1890, its neo-Gothic spire dominating the skyline and serving as a landmark for ships sailing into New York Harbor. The structure is now encircled by taller neighbors. In addition to the spire, key features of the church include three sets of bronze doors and the 23 bells housed in the tower. Alexander Hamilton (the first U.S. Secretary of the Treasury) and Robert Fulton (pioneering steamship builder) are among the notables buried in the Trinity churchyard. Other people of prominence with ties to Trinity include members of the Astor family, John James Audubon (leading naturalist), and Clement Clarke Moore (author of ‘Twas the Night Before Christmas’). The church is open daily, has a full schedule of services, and welcomes visitors.
