The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is located on the fringe of New York's Central Park and is colloquially referred to as The Met. It is one of the largest art galleries in the world and houses over 2 million pieces of art in its permanent collections. These are located in 19 different departments spread across several buildings. The collections include works of art from the European masters as well as modern American art. In addition to this there are also ancient works from Greece, Egypt, the Byzantine and Roman periods and the Islamic world. Whilst large areas of The Met are dedicated to paintings and sculptures there are also large collections of costumes, weapons, musical instruments and other artefacts. The Metropolitan Museum of Art dates from 1870 and was originally founded by a group of businessmen and financiers that collaborated with the influential artists of the day. Today the museum is a popular tourist attraction in the city and attracts around 5 million visitors a year. Opening times and admission charges can be found on the website.

Central Park

Central Park

Central Park is America's first park, issue from a design competition won by Frederick Law Olmsted and Calvert Vaux. It spreads from 5th Avenue, over a 6 mile perimeter in the heart of New York, covering 843 acres, 136 of which are woodland, 250 acres of lawns and 150 acres of water. The original park plans took 15 years to complete and cost the equivalent of 200 million US dollars to build. Almost 5 million cubic meters of soil and rock where transported, 36 bridges and arches built, 11 overpasses, the Belverdere castle, 51 sculptures and over 500 000 plantations. In the park live 275 species of migratory birds, 21 playgrounds, 6.5 miles of park drives and 4.5 miles of pathways. The traffic along the park drives is regulated and each drive has opening and closing times which can be found on the official web site of the park.
