With its recent refurbishment this is a very smart, well located and stylish hotel and makes a great base for exploring New York City.

We stayed here just as the hotel was completing its refurbishment in late 2005 and were lucky enough to be upgraded to a suite with a great view of the Empire State Building! The bedroom was huge, especially by New York City standards, with two enormous beds, a giant-sized marble bathroom and a separate lounge which was as big as a bedroom itself! Very clean, lovely decor and efficient room service.

An interesting building which is on a corner of East 29th Street and Madison Avenue - very central and great for both upper and lower Manhattan. Only a couple of blocks to the Empire State Building and within walking distance of Park Avenue, Grand Central and a host of attractions, shops, restaurants and cafes. Fantastic lobby with an unusual waterfall feature right down one wall. Pleasant bar which served great cocktails - I tried my first Manhattan, it seemed apt! Don't know about business, sports or spa facilities as this was a purely sightseeing trip.

Can't say a lot about the food as we only ate breakfast here on one morning. It was very good and the atmosphere in the dining area was friendly with good service. There was still some work going on in parts of the dining areas so not easy to make a judgement. It was almost complete at the end of 2005 when we stayed.

Quiet Location

Excellent location as mentioned previously. At 29th Street so it's convenient for midtown, not too far to get up to Central Park and the upper East and West sides and also an easy journey down to the business district, Greenwich Village, SoHo, Ground Zero and the ferries. We decided against the Circle Line cruise and instead took the Staten Island Ferry which is great - terrific views of Manhattan and the Statue of Liberty. Lots of shopping close to the hotel - Park and 5th Avenues are easily walkable. Not a particularly quiet location but we were on a high floor with good double glazing and weren't bothered too much by city or street noise.
