  • Hotel Sunrise Beach Resort by ResortQuest Panama City Beach
The city of Leicester has a very long history, deriving from a Roman settlement founded where a military road (the Foss Way) crossed the River Soar. The area to the south west of the present city centre is peppered with ancient monuments which testify to the importance of the town to monarchs (Norman, Plantagenet, York, Tudor, Victorian) of two millennia. It is a five minute walk from the Clock Tower. Norman Leicester is concentrated in the Castle Gardens Conservation Area (an area bounded by the present day Grand Union Canal, St Nicholas Circle, Vaughn Way and The Newarke). The Castle Gardens, which include pathways, lawns, borders, trees and a rock garden, slope upwards away from the canal toe path. At the West Bridge end there is a monument to King Richard III who passed through the town on his way to the Battle of Bosworth in 1485. The highest part represents the mound which formed part of the earthworks of Leicester Castle. This was a mott-and-bailey construction incorporating the existing Roman walls and was commissioned by William I after the Battle of Hastings (1068). Starting at the mediaeval Castle Gateway at its northern end a narrow twisting cobbled street runs past The Castle Hall. It passes into The Newarke through the equally old Ruperts Gateway. The Castle Hall is now a Grade I listed building. Originally The Great Hall, it was built in the 12th century and is the oldest surviving aisled and bay-divided hall in Europe. It has a timber roof dating from the 1500s. It underwent conversion and become the County Court in the 18th century. Although now unused, the courthouse structure complete with cells remains. Adjacent to the Hall is a cellar built of sandstone blocks that runs under the courtyard known as John of Gaunts Dungeon. On the eastern edge of the Castle Gardens stands St Mary de Castro Church. Also part of the Norman site are the Magazine Gateway and the Turret Gateway which were entrances into the inner bailey of the original castle. The Castle Hall is open on infrequent occasions to the public. Details can be obtained from The Guildhall, Leicester. LE1 5FQ Guided tours of St Mary de Castro Church take place on Saturdays and certain Summer Bank Holidays. Further information from the vicar. The Castle Gardens are open access daily during the hours of daylight.
