Eglise de La Madeleine

Eglise de La Madeleine

L’église de la Madeleine is a Roman Catholic Church situated on the Place Louis XV, in the 8th arrondissement in the heart of Paris, to the north of Place de la Concorde, west of Place Vendôme and east of the Saint Augustin Church. The present monument was built in honour of Napoleons army in 1755. The Church’s emplacement was previously that of a synagogue which was seized by the Bishop Maurice de Sully in 1182 and made into a Church dedicated to Mary Magdalene. After two false starts of the construction, Napoleon elaborated a architectural competition in 1806 won by Beaumont but the Emperor chose Pierre-Alexandre Barthélémy Vignon to carry it out. It is based on an antique Neo-Classical style design resembling the Maison Carré in Nîmes. Jacques-Marie Huvé replaced the Vignon who died before finishing his construction. The fifty two columns measure 20 metres height wise, these are present around the entire structure. The Church has a single nave with three domes and above the high alter, a statue of Mary Magdalene being carried to heaven by two angles.
