City Hall Port Elizabeth

City Hall Port Elizabeth

The City Hall of Port Elizabeth was built in between 1858 and 1862 and is home to the City Council's Chamber. The clock tower of the colonial style building is a later addition and dates from 1883. The building was destroyed during a fire in 1977 and has been totally reconstructed since. Within the city hall you can also find a hall that is used for concerts and other events . The Dias Cross, which was a present from the Portuguese government and is a replica of cross dedicated to the Saint George can be seen here. The City Hall overlooks the large market square of Port Elizabeth where a street market is being held regularly .

The Wood'n'Spoon

The Wood'n'Spoon

The Wood'n'Spoon is located on Port St Johns second beach. The kitchen of the restaurant is located in an old and brightly painted caravan. The furniture at the Wood'n'Spoon was handmade by the Swiss owner who serves fresh fish and also freshly prepared sandwiches. The atmosphere is very relaxed and there are no fixed opening hours. Just pop in when you are in the area.

Nelson Mandela National Museum

Nelson Mandela National Museum

Opened in February 2000, the museum is considered to be "one of South Africa's most significant heritage institutions" and displays, amongst other things, "an international selection of diverse gifts" presented to Mandela during his presidency. The museum is also the starting point for a tour which includes a visit to the birthplace and childhood home of Nelson Mandela at Mvezo and Qunu respectively.

Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour

Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour

The canopy tours give visitors the opportunity to harness up and glide between the trees, obtaining a birdseye-view of the forest below. There are ten platforms on the route and guides provide information about the fauna, flora, birdlife and ecology in general. There are more than 100 species of trees alone, many of them ancient mammoths, and the tour lasts for approximately 3 hours. Funds generated by tourists are also applied to the conservation of the forests. Some of the options available include a flight to the private airstrip at Plettenberg Bay.
