Piazza del Campidoglio

Piazza del Campidoglio

Piazza di Campidoglio is located in Rome, at the top of the Capitol Hill, which was the most politically important of ancient Rome's seven hills. The current layout of Piazza di Campidoglio is of Michelangelo's design. He was commissioned by Pope Paul III to design the piazza, which was completed between 1536 and 1546. The Piazza is reached by Michelangelo's ramp-like staircase, the Cordonata, guarded by lions and restored classical statues of Castor and Pollux. The piazza itself is trapeze-shaped, covered with geometric paving that both links the buildings together and guides the eye of the visitor. In the middle stands a replica of an equestrian statue of Marcus Aurelius. The square is flanked by three palazzi: Nuovo, Conservatorio and Senatorio, whose facades were also designed by Michelangelo. Palazzo Nuovo and Palazzo Conservatorio currently house the Capitoline museums of sculpture and painting.
