[more]Holy Trinity church in Rothwell has two claims to fame. It has the longest nave in the UK with a length of 173 feet (53 m) and it has one of only two 'bone crypts' (also known as Charnel Houses) in the country.
The oldest parts of the church date to the 11th Century although most of what you see today is 13th Century in origin. The stone used in the construction is local Northamptonshire Sandstone.
The Bone Crypt dates to the 13th Century and contains the skulls and femurs of 1500 men. The crypt is open to the public on Sundays between Easter and the end of September from 2.30pm to 4pm. A donation of £2 per person is much appreciated.
