The San Diego Opera, founded in 1965, is located in the Civic Centre in Downtown San Diego and offers seating for 3000 visitors. It has been named as one of the top 10 opera companies in the US by Opera America and director Ian Campbell is leading director of the house. It offers a five month season each year with changing programmes. This year's productions range from Boris Godunov to Wozzek and the company has lined up internationally renowned artists to perform. The programme for the new seasons is published in May, with ticket sales starting in December. Backstage tours and pre-opera lectures are also provided.

USS Midway Aircraf Carrier Museum

USS Midway Aircraf Carrier Museum

The museum is located on board the USS Midway, an aircraft carrier that has served for 47 years. It started its career at the end of WW2 (1945) and ended it after Desert Storm in 1991. Throughout these many years it took part in many missions, both military and humanitarian. Visitors can expect to see more than 35 exhibits on board of the carrier, which include Aircraft Engines, Forecastle Deck (Foc'sle), the Galley , the Captain's Bridge and At-Sea-Cabin and much more. There are also a minimum of 21 restored aircraft on board and 2 flight simulators. The self-guided audio-tour is narrated in big parts by veterans who used to serve on the Midway and are more than willing to share a few anecdotes. The Midway is accessible for the infirm and there are handicapped parking spaces close to the entrance, as well as free parking for everybody. Further amenities include a gift shop and a cafe. Opening hours: Daily from 10 am to 5 pm , last admission at 4 pm. Closed on Christmas and Thanksgiving. Children under 5 and persons on active duty (in uniform) go free.

Opened in 2004, the PETCO Park baseball stadium has replaced the Qualcomm Stadium as home of the San Diego Padres. The stadium has been designed to blend in with the area and the neighboring park has been integrated into the landscape. The stadium offers more than 42.000 seats, all with lots of leg-room and cup-holders. tViews over the city of San Diego can be enjoyed from the signature towers and terraces and a standing platform and the fan shop can be accessed from the 98-year old historic Western Metal Supply Company Building, which has been totally restored and incorporated in the structure of the stadium. Further amenities include a restaurant with views over the playing field, party suites and, 80 feet above the ground, bleacher seating and standing room on the roof. The stadium is connected to the local transport system of San Diego, but also offers plenty of parking facilities. For those who would like to see the stadium, but want to give the baseball a miss - there is also a stadium tour available. It includes entry to the "writers box" (where the journalists usually jot down their notes), a visit to one of the exclusive premier lounges, the dugout of the Padres and more. Since November 2005 the stadium also hosts concerts, tradeshows and other events.

The Museum of Air and Space is dedicated to aviation and space flight history. Starting from a model of the Montgolfiers first hot air balloon in history, it will lead the visitor through a collection that will cover every aspect and development of aviation up to space age technology. In the hall of fame visitors have the chance to meet everybody who ever has substantially contributed to this science, including Charles Lindbergh, Gagarin and Armstrong. All in all the exhibition is divided into 11 different themes, which covers private, commercial and military aircraft and heroes, as well as spacecraft . Simulator rides of a F-22 Raptor put the visitor in charge of the cockpit with the ability to do a full 360 degree barrel roll and to fire weapons. The museum holds special events for visitors of all ages and birthday parties for children can be arranged. The museum is widely accessible for disabled visitors. Opening times : Daily from 10am-4.30 pm, during summer until 5.30 Closed:Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Years Day
