Hotel The Bell Thetford
The Bell in Thetford began its eventful life as a seminary but under Henry VIIIs dissolution of the monasteries it was sold as an inn in 1540 and renamed the Bell. The sense of history is enhanced at The Bell by the fact that the hotel retains much of its original character. Uncovered in 1938 when layers of wallpaper were stripped away Tudor wall paintings were discovered from an old open gallery. These paintings can now been seen preserved behind glass in one of the bedrooms.The Bell Hotel is also famous as the home of the cast and crew of the television series Dads Army. Thetford features throughout the Dads Army series providing backdrops to many of the programmes scenes.
Hotel The Olde Windmill Inn Thetford
A village inn since circa 1650. The hostelry has built its reputation on serving high quality competitively priced food, from an extensive menu with changing daily specials; plus six real ales together with twelve different draught beers and lagers. The Windmill has three bars plus a variety of different rooms and dining areas all steeped in history and olde world charm. Hotel Lynford Hall Thetford
A Grade II listed mansion built in the Jacobean style designed by William Burn and constructed between 1857 and 1862 to replace a former hall built in 1720 by James Nelthorpe whose daughter married James Hoste, the then owner of Sandringham House. The property was built for Stephen Lyne-Stephens who married Pauline (Yolande Marie-Louise) Duvernay, the celebrated French ballerina. The property extended to 7,718 acres and was renowned as one of the finest sporting estates in East Anglia.
