    云冈石窟 - yúngāng shíkū

    Ende des 5./Anfang des 6. Jahrhunderts nach Christus begannen buddhistische Mönche unter der damals hier ansässigen Dynastie der Nördlichen Wei insgesamt 252 Grotten und Nischen in die Steilhänge des Wuzhou-Berges zu schlagen. Aus den Sandsteinwänden der Höhlen hauten sie tausende Buddhastatuen. Die größte misst stolze 17 Meter, die kleinsten nur wenige Zentimeter. Als herausragendes Beispiel der Steinmetzkunst in der Frühphase des chinesischen Buddhismus wurde die gesamte Anlage im Jahre 2001 in die Liste des Weltkulturerbes aufgenommen. Die Grotten liegen ca. 16km westlich von Datong.
