Canale Grande

Canale Grande

The Grand Canal is located in Venice, Italy. It is a canal that provides water-traffic passages in the city. There are both private water taxis and public water buses but most of the tourists prefer to go by gondola. The canal is 3800 metres long and between 30 to 90 metres wide. The average depth of the canal is five metres. The canal is in an S-shape form with one end of the canal leading to the lagoon and the other end leads to Saint Mark Basin. There are more than 170 buildings lined up by the canal banks. Most of the buildings are from the 13th to 18th century. The Rialto Bridge was the only bridge until the 19th century because most of the traffic was going along the canal and not across it. Nowadays there are two more bridges called the Ponte degli Scalzi and the Ponte dell’Accademia, a forth bridge is currently being built.
