[Zeke, 09/02/2011] Belogradchik, about a 3 hour drive from Sofia to the north of the Stara Planina, is an amazing site to see. The seem to pop our of nowhere but once you arrive, you find large karst pillars scattered throughout the local forest of Belogradchik. You can easily spend a day or two here, it's probably one of the most spectacular natural formations in the Balkans and should not be missed.
There is an old Roman fortress which is worth hanging around to photograph. In the Roman times, this was on the fronteir protecting the empire from northern invasions and they built it well hidden into the rocks.
