Positive Reviews

Centrally located guest house.

The Holly Cottages Guest House is located in the conservation locale in central Bowness-on-Windermere. The 17th century guest house is right opposite to the popular World of Beatrix Potter Attraction. It is four minutes from the Lake Windermere where the promenade is present on the waterfront for guests to enjoy a stroll. They can even take trips on boats. Many shops, bars, restaurants and cafes are a mere five minute walk from the guest house.

Simple and comfortable rooms.

The rooms at the guest house are of four types – small double room, standard double room, large double room, one with balcony and one with padded window seating. All rooms except the small double room have garden views. The rooms show case period decor and are simply but tastefully furnished. Every room has a television and tea and coffee makers. Most rooms are en suite and some shared and Hubble Bubble Organics soap is provided.

Helpful staff.

The guest house tends to an organic garden which has hens. The staffs are helpful and provide great tips and guidance for travel around the area. The breakfast fare is continental and complimentary. The menu served is cereal, fresh fruit and toast. For all other elaborate meals there are several restaurants, bars and cafes in the surrounding area.

Negative Reviews

Breakfast facility not great.

Cooked breakfast is not provided. The toast served is overdone most times. The tables are not cleaned immediately so guests end up having to share clean tables with other guests and borrow clean cups and plates.

Rates on higher side.

The rates are rather expensive and not value for money spent.

Maintenance in some areas required.

The carpets on stairway and landing are dirty and smell peculiar. Heating keeps going on and off leaving the guests feeling cold. Leaking in bathrooms is an issue as the leakage seeps into the bedrooms below making the bed and linens wet!
