About Sukhna Lake

When Le Corbusier, the chief architect of Chandigarh, was working on the design of the city he wanted to create a focal point to which the inhabitants would be drawn for "care of body and spirit" and this concept was expressed in the creation of Sukhna Lake.

The lake is located in the north east of the city, close to the Rock Garden and sitting in the shadow of the Shivalik Hills. The lake is entirely man-made, created by building a dam across the Sukhna Choe, a seasonal stream that brought water from the hills to the plain below.

The lake is 3-square km in size and is used for both competitive and leisure water sports and the surrounding parkland attracts walkers and families with picnics. At the entrance there are restaurants, bars and fast-food outlets.

The lake is an important wetland habitat for migratory birds including Siberian ducks, cranes and storks, and has been given protected status by the Indian government.

The lake has been used as a venue for international rowing competitions such as the Asian Rowing Championship and has the longest distance course for rowing and yachting in Asia.
