About Riverside

The Riverside Hotel is a bed and breakfast housed in a small seventeenth-century building on the banks of the Colne River.

Each of the eighteen guest rooms is en-suite with rustic timber fittings, a desk and free Wi-Fi. Some include a TV and tea/coffee facilities as well.

The complimentary services on offer to guests of the Riverside Hotel include private parking, a full English breakfast and Wi-Fi connectivity from most parts of the establishment. There is a lounge with adjacent bar for guests to enjoy a drink or some reading perhaps.

The cosy restaurant carries through the rustic Norman-style set-up with its low ceilings and exposed timber beams. Breakfast is served here but there is the possibility of room service on request.

A few minutes’ walk away are Colchester Town, Colchester Castle and its park and both the town’s main train stations.

Positive Reviews

Central but calm location at the riverside.

Being close enough to walk to public transport links and some historic attractions, The Riverside Hotel still maintains a calm atmosphere as it is right on the banks of the Colne river and off any major motorways.

Character of a centuries’-old building.

Character of a centuries’-old building The hotel is in a seventeeth-centry Grade II listed historical building in England’s oldest recorded town, which is quite the thrill for many. Lovers of history may also appreciate being close to Colchester Castle and its museum.

Free private parking.

The guests’ parking is a small one but it’s secure and comes at no extra cost.

Negative Reviews

No evening meals available in-house.

The complimentary breakfast is available either in-room or at the restaurant, however there is no dinner service thereafter. Due to the location though, it is not a problem to find and get to restaurants and entertainment centres.

Some fairly dated areas.

Understandably, some parts of the hotel are rather old and run-down and certainly need replacing or restoration, for example some furniture, carpets in certain areas, the building exterior, etc. As it is a listed historical building however, more major renovations are not so simple to carry out. At the end of the day, a few days in this piece of history may be worth your while if only for the experience.

Noise ingress at street-facing rooms.

As the hotel is walking distance to various restaurants and pubs, there have been instances of guests hearing activity outside their window from people coming from a night of drinking. If possible, request a room not facing out onto the street.
