About Cowes Week

This sailing event has been running since 1826 and is held annually in early August. Its importance in the British social calendar is shown by the fact that it was traditionally timed to finish before the grouse shooting season begins on 12 August. Racing takes place in the Solent, just off Cowes in the north of the island, and if the tides are unfavourable, the event has to be moved by a few days.

It now attracts around 8,500 competitors of all standards from world class to club sailors, racing in 40 classes. From 1994 the event was known as Skandia Cowes Week after its major sponsor; this sponsorship has, however, finished at the end of the 2008 event.

Over 100,000 spectators attend, attracted not just by the racing but also the carnival atmosphere in the town. A major non-sailing feature of the Week is the firework display, launched from barges, which takes place on the last Friday.
